History
Taya was born in Tucson, Arizona on Earth on April 17, 2367. She is the younger of two children, with an older brother. It was discovered in her early years that she was much more perceptive and intelligent for her age. Testing revealed she had a high IQ. She also has an ear for music, a beautiful singing voice. She learned to play the flute. Because of all of this, she received advanced schooling.
At first, Taya found it difficult to make friends. She had a greater intelligence, but she also had the immaturity that went with her age. While dealing with that, other children were sometimes jealous of her, or she came across as superior. Taya got into fights, but as she matured, she found a balance and was able to fit into society.
Taya’s parents, both in Starfleet, fought in the Dominion War, so she and her brother stayed with relatives. Both parents survived, but her mother was wounded and received a medical discharge from Starfleet. Because of this, Taya began showing an interest in the medical field. The more she read and studied, the more she was drawn to it. Following in her parents’ footsteps, she applied to Starfleet Medical, easily passing the entrance exam. After graduation, she was assigned to Starbase 403.
In her first year on 403, she had an interesting time getting along with her shift supervisor. Taya’s blunt and direct personality was viewed as a poor bedside manner. Her supervisor felt a gentler approach was better. Taya believed that truth was truth, so there was no point in hiding it in false hope. Her successes as a doctor got her through it until she attained enough seniority to move to another shift.
In 2398, disaster struck. Taya was now a shift supervisor, with the rank of full lieutenant. The daughter of a visiting admiral fell ill with an unknown sickness. All available personnel were assigned to her care. While on Taya’s duty shift, there was an error made in the meds given to the daughter and she died from an allergic reaction. Though it wasn’t certain who actually made the mistake, Taya was brought before a formal hearing. She was blamed for the tragedy and given the sentence of a six-month suspension of her medical license, a reduction in rank, removal of all supervisory duties, which was to be followed by three years of probation. Feeling she was unfairly treated, Taya punched the security officer escorting her out of the court, breaking his nose. Because of this, her license was revoked and Taya was dishonorably discharged from Starfleet.
After her removal from Starfleet, Taya couldn’t return home, as she was a disgrace to her family. Angry and bitter, and with few options, she decided to seek employment on freighters and other civilian vessels. The problem was, if she were to practice medicine without a license, she would be a criminal under Federation law. Out of desperation, she contacted a Ferengi restaurant owner she knew on Starbase 403. Spending all the currency she had, she secured a license to practice medicine from the government of Ferenginar. Since the Ferengi homeworld wasn’t a member of the Federation, she didn’t know how Starfleet would react if they ever found out, but it was a legal document and her only choice. Going from ship, to planet, to ship again, she ended up on Dozaria Colony where she set up a free clinic. Because of the harsh conditions and lack of resources, she had to deal with the black market for many of her supplies. She learned general engineering skills just to keep her medical equipment functioning. One of the men in the neighborhood around the clinic taught her basic martial arts skills to protect herself.
Taya has a brash and outgoing personality. Still bitter over being unfairly kicked out of Starfleet, she can be quick to anger.
