Under pressure from his family to join the Andorian Home Guard, but wanting to explore the galaxy, Shriv began volunteering at the Federation embassy. There he learned the necessary requirements for applying to Starfleet Academy, and earned the respect and endorsement of a Federation judicial liaison, Alan Smithee.
