Summary

Hedwig Thörsen is a young Starfleet Security Officer with a keen sense of honor and a pragmatic approach to life.

In the early stages of his career, Hedwig chafed during his first year of duty spent aboard Starbase 72, serving as a brig officer – yearning for a life typified by action and adventure. The opportunity of a lifetime was readily grasped, when he was offered the chance to serve aboard the Odyssey-class Heavy Explorer, USS Hikaru Sulu and (for all intents & purposes), Hedwig outwardly celebrated his good luck.

But Hedwig holds a guilty secret. His posting aboard the prestigious Capital – ship is not the product of merit alone, rather it is the outcome of blackmail. When Thörsen caught a Starfleet Operations officer in a compromising position, he realized this was his chance to escape his dreary existence by choosing to turn a blind – eye, in return for her silence and his shipboard posting.

Whilst troubled by his guilty conscience, Ensign Hedwig Thörsen is determined to make amends for his lapse in judgement by becoming a model Security – officer.

Ensign Hedwig Thörsen was KIA during the operation to liberate Cardassian settlers held hostage by stranded Vaadwaur forces at the Agricultural colony of New Providence, in the former Demiliterized Zone.

Appearance

Hedwig Ivar Thörsen is a young Scandinavian man in his twenty-second year.

He stands 5ft 11ins tall, with a ruddy complexion that is testament to a lifetime spent outdoors. He has sandy – blonde hair that is neatly barbered and is clean – shaven. He has slightly sorrowful grey eyes that seem to mask some inner turmoil of secret.

Hedwig was raised in a Norwegian coastal town and has been raised engaging in hiking, fishing and outdoor pursuits, so he has an lean, but athletic build.

Personality

Hedwig is an earnest young man, a fact that has put him at odds with the subterfuge that he perpetuated to gain a place aboard the USS Hikaru Sulu. This dichotomy sits uncomfortably with him, but he is glad to be aboard and therein lies a quandary.

He is socially affable, but evasive if asked about details of his former career, before joining the crew always seeming to steer the conversation to other matters.

He is physically brave and works well as a member of a team, although lacks the breadth of life – experience that typifies the seasoned Starfleet Security officer.

Hedwig seeks to prove himself, thus has applied for a position with the Hazardous Situation Response Team and has been assigned to the training – unit, Hazard Team “Iaitō”  – where he is beginning to struggle under the weight of expectation leveled by the ship’s iteration of the TTH, Master Chief Isagi Saroga.

History

Hedwig was born in the coastal city of Tromsø, in Norway – the son of Mangus (a noted Oceanographer) and Tiorve (a local magistrate), and was raised both with an abiding love of nature and a respect for the stability enshrined in the rule of Law.

Despite his parents misgivings, Hedwig became the first in his family to pursue a career in Starfleet, enrolling in the Starfleet Academy campus in San Francisco in 2396 AD. Whilst not a standout cadet, Hedwig displayed a persistent determination and he preserved through some of his more academic studies and demonstrated a fair aptitude for Security Studies and was accepted into the Security Training Faculty in 2397.

Hedwig’s strength came not as a standout or a leader, but he showed merit as a cohesive part of team interactions and this saw him graduate as an Ensign in 2400 AD. Initially assigned to Fourth Fleet as a Junior Security Officer – assigned to duty with Taskforce 72, he was posted to Starbase 72 in the Minos Korva system and quickly discovered that the general – workaday realities of Security – work lacked the vim and verve of his preconceptions and his youthful exuberance felt muted by the humdrum tedium of managing and caring for prisoners, drunken spacers, AWOL Starfleet personnel and the multitudes of unfortunates that had the back luck to spend a spell in the Starbase’s Brig – facility.

As fate would have it, Hedwig saw the chance for a reprieve when an influential member of the Starbase’s Operations team (who was responsible for personnel allocations) was caught ‘in – flagrante’ with another married officer. Eager to avoid the ensuring scandal, the officer convinced Hedwig to ‘lose’ the official records of the arrest – in return she would acquiesce to his desire to pursue a more meaningful career path and approve a shipboard duty transfer.

Wether it was a folly of youth, a moment of careless – decision or just a testament to a flaw in his character, Hedwig agreed to the Faustian bargain and has spent the intervening period troubled by a persistent sense of nagging guilt for what he has done.

A young officer, at the beginning of a promising career, Hedwig Ivar Thörsen will have to decide what kind of officer he wants to be? Should he keep his indiscretion forever secret and strive to redeem himself through thought and action, or should he face the music and confess his poor decision and hope that command takes this contriteness into consideration when deciding his fate?
