Summary

Tahlari Vahl is a Barzan Scientist who wears her stern composure like a part of her Starfleet Uniform. She carries the weight of a lifetime in Starfleet; from the poverty of Barzan II, through the decades of exploration, to the trauma of Frontier Day. She’s methodical, sincere and fiercely loyal to the Starfleet crewmembers she regards as family.

Appearance

She has a pair of subtle ridges on their eyebrows and foreheads. Her wavy hair is Medium to Dark brown in colour and is often worn down, it falls just past her shoulders. She has a medium skin tone which now has visible wrinkles due to her age.

She often carries a stern look, even when in the best of moods, she poses a formidable natural authority.

She relies on augmentation while off the homeworld of Barzan II in the form of a breather that provides her with the gases found in her native atmosphere. She has converted her quarters to allow her to remove the breather when off duty.

Personality

The poverty of the Barzanian species is woven into their culture, with the expectation that each sacrificed for the needs of their family. Tahlari Vahl now sees Starfleet as an expansion of that family and has devoted her life in service to it and the people she serves alongside.

A scientist at heart, Vahl is very methodical and curious. She respects reasoned arguments that are backed up and welcomes people who challenge her assumptions.

The losses of the tragedy of Frontier Day are woven deep within her and she carries the grief with her. She is prone to overwork herself to stay busy and will often take things on herself instead of delegating.

History

Early Life

Vahl was born on Barzan II in 2357.

With the backing of a Starfleet Captain from the Federation Embassy on Barzan II, she left her homeworld for Starfleet Academy. She arrived on Earth in 2375 at the age of 18 years old to begin her career in Starfleet.

Starfleet Academy (2375-2379)

Vahl joined Starfleet at the end of the Dominion-Federation war. Tensions were still high in the aftermath of the war with effects felt throughout her time at the Academy.

USS Nye – Science Officer (2379-2384)

As a freshly promoted Ensign, Vahl, was assigned to the USS as a Science Officer on Board. Her dream of exploring the unknown was to come to fruition. The return of the USS Voyager in her final years at the Academy had reignited many officers aspiration to get back out into the black, and she was one of them.

The USS Nye, a Nova Class Vessel left the shipyards early 2380, she spent the first real 5 years of her service exploring the former demilitarised zone, fully accessible to the Federation as a result of the Treaty of Bajor.

USS Horsehead – Science Officer (2384-2396)

Vahl served on the USS Horsehead for over a decade across two 5 year exploratory missions. She quickly became focused on multi-disciplinary planetary surveys. After solidifying her position on board she became an integral part of the Science team, often representing them in senior briefings.

Her time aboard the horsehead cemented her habit of long hours performing meticulous assessment. This time also revealed an emerging knack for diplomacy at the edge of Federation space.

USS Oberon – Chief Science Officer (2396-2401)

Vahl was promoted to Chief Science Officer and transferred to the Luna Class USS Oberon. She spent 5 years overseeing a broad portfolio of long-range astrophysical surveys, planet studies and supported first contact missions. She shaped the ships science department into a tightly coordinated network of specialists.

The events of Frontier Day in 2401 shattered the balance she created in the team. The Oberon suffered heavy losses during that day. Vahl regarded the catastrophe as an institutional failure and the guilt of surviving when so many did not pushed her to leave starship service for an envoy roll.

Starfleet Envoy (2401-Present)

Following the events on the 250th anniversary (Frontier Day) of Starfleet, Vahl opted to fulfil an envoy role. The toll of losing so many of her crewmates and her friends from across the fleet was to great. She’s currently liaising with the civilian Independent Archaeologists Guild. Assisting with their efforts in discovering the mysteries of the Shackleton Expanse.

In the back end of 2402, Vahl was assigned to the Caelari System in the Shackleton Expanse. There, she assisted its efforts in conducting its first ever first contact observation, cultural assessment and coordinated with a Klingon vessel. Vahl’s assistance with developing relations with the Caelari government was instrumental in developing and maintaining relations with their people.
