Four historic naval vessels have carried the name USS Cardinal. Each ship was a mine countermeasures vessel that utilized advanced sensors to detect waterborne explosives. A major part of the Cardinal’s mission today is to watch Starfleet’s flank for all manner of anomalies.
The USS Cardinal embodies the Federation’s commitment to scientific advancement and humanitarian support to its frontier worlds. The Nebula-class vessel can adapt to the diverse challenges faced along Starfleet’s edge. It is most often equipped with a sensor pod that extends its scanning capabilities across an entire sector with microscopic precision. The craft is a critical early-warning and survey platform when it operates in contested or uncharted regions. Identifying dangerous spatial phenomena is a major responsibility. Information gathered can also be used for intelligence or counterinsurgency purposes.
